Picked up this really sweet 1984 Duracraft drill press for $100 on FB Market for the new workshop. Had to do a good bit of restore work: new belt, oil bath, etc. Works like new now, though.

I have a real soft spot for these 1970s to 1980s Taiwanese-made drill presses. I have a similar one at home. They are built like tanks and are super easy to work on! #drillpress #shoptools

Great to see our friends @washboardbreezy and @bigdamnband tonight at @exit_in!

If you are not hip to Rev. Peyton's Big Damn Band, they are one of, if not the, best touring blues act out there right now. Rev is one of my favorite people to watch play the guitar - even in a time when he getting some attention and credit, I still think he is underappreciated.

His playing is deeply rooted in tradition and yet manages to be ground-breaking. He has a "Roy Clark" esque demeanor on stage that makes it hard not to smile when he is playing. Breezy also, coincidentally, is the best washboard player I have ever met. Besides all of that, they are some of the hardest working musicians in the game. Go listen to their new album "Honeysuckle," it is really something special!

The Mastertone banjo from yesterday turned out great - just gotta let it settle in for a couple days!

We are fairly certain the ring and resonator is from 1927 and the neck and hardware conversion was done by Liberty Banjo Co in the late 1960s to early 1970s.

All told, this is one of the best banjoes I have ever heard. I am not selling it, but my customer is, so message me if you are interested. #mastertone #mastertonebanjo #prewarGibson

Big shout out to @jeffsennguitars for bequeathing me this 1970s Westbury MIJ Model 1005 (among other items). Jeff recently moved north and left me a pile of really cool stuff he knew I would appreciate. This amp is a sweetie, and I will happily be adding it to my collection.

In addition to being a world-class guitar builder, I have always had a deep respect for Jeff. I was working at Mario Guitars (@marioguitars / @guitarmill) when I met him, and I couldn't have been older than 21-22. I hadn't even thought of Guitarcheology - just some kid working for Mario back then. Jeff always took the time to talk to me as a peer and treat my input as that of a colleague. I always have appreciated that about him.

So, this post shares two purposes: 1. Look at the cool new amp I got. And 2. Go buy a guitar from Jeff Senn. He is making some really cool stuff and is a really swell guy.

New workshop update! 1. If you missed Jayme and

New workshop update!

1. If you missed Jayme and I in the shop today, it is because we were setting up the shipping station at the new workshop - complete with partitioned box storage and bubble wrap dispenser roll I designed.

2. The workshop part of the shop is still a mess, and I have a ton of stuff to buy, build and organize yet, but it is actually starting to look like a workshop.

3. We got a rad vintage couch and coffee table from the thrift store for the lobby / demo room.

4. Got my @chibson_usa "Don't Shred On Me" flag hung next to the crapper.

This has been a slow process that his been disrupted by family emergencies and personal emergencies, but it is finally starting to come together.

Big shout out to my wife, who did a lot of the small setup, hanging lights, installing the security system, getting the computer set up, etc. I sure do love that wife of mine. I probably couldn't put my pants on without her. ❤️

After many months of development and tens of thousands of dollars later - we are proud to announce that we are swinging whole heartedly into the AI age. Introducing: JackGPT

I was at the store a few months ago, and there was a lady there asking questions about her son's first guitar, and meanwhile a consignment needed to be written up, and meanwhile an appraisal needed to be given and meanwhile a few branding decisions needed to be made and meanwhile...well, you get the point.

I found myself thinking "if only I could help multiple people at once," and then I realized that through the modern miracle of artificial antelligence, I CAN actually do more than one thing at a time (in a manner of speaking).

I worked with a team of nueroscientists at Vanderbilt University who took MRIs and 3D models of my brain, and then paid some computer coding interns at MTSU create a Jack-based AI chat module based on that data.

Yes, next time you visit our store or website, you do not have to wait for me to be done with the previous customer's query. Just pull up the JackGPT module and ask it any question you would ask the real me.

I will be relinquishing all business functions to the mighty JackGPT, and if you need me (the real Jack), I will be camping and fishing on Center Hill Lake for the next 14-17 business years.

Since this page has become my "lifestyle blog" and not just strictly guitar stuff, I thought some people might want "A Tale of Two Grandmas" update.

My paternal Grandma is home and feeling much better. I am beyond relieved and visited her at home when I was in Paducah.

My maternal Grandmother is feeling better, but is not going to be able to live on her own, confirmed. We got her moved out of her independent living apartment this weekend and got all her stuff in storage. Pics related - before to after.

We had a meeting with the Medicare liason this morning that went very well. We are pretty confident she is going to get approved - which means she can continue to live at the horrendously expensive rehab / care facility she is currently at for as long as she needs. It is sad to see her go into such intense care, but this is really the best outcome as for her getting the care and 24/7 attention she needs at this point of her life.

Needless to say, I have put down a considerable chunk of money for moving, a storage locker, hotels, etc. SO, I will likely be putting together a "HELP NANNY" sale to help me make some money back. Stay tuned for deals for a good cause!

I appreciate everyone who reached out or shared their experiences in homing their elderly relatives. It was beyond helpful.

I especially could not of done this without the help of my wonderful Mom, my absolutely incredible wife and my dear friends The Thaxtons and Austin Jones who all came out to help me pack and move. Thank you guys so much.

I really have some of the best friends and fans in the world and I appreciate you guys so much ❤️

Hey guys, as you might have heard, my life has gotten real lately and I could use some extra money dollars to help my family during this trying time.

I am not asking for charity - I am just asking that if you are eyeing a new piece of gear that you could just as easily buy from me - I could use the help a lot more than Guitar Center right now.

OR if you have a guitar you need fixed, bring it down and let us do the repair. We do not have long leads, most repairs in under a week, and the money earned here lately will go towards helping rehome my elderly grandmother.

Hey, hello, hi: Got a bit of a "good news, bad new

Hey, hello, hi: Got a bit of a "good news, bad news" situation. My paternal grandmother, 87, is doing great. Back to her old self again and will get to go home on Thursday (which also happens to be her birthday).

Bad news, my maternal grandmother, 80, is in a bad way. Her insurance ran out yesterday. The rehab will kick her out unless she can qualify for Medicaid. What is worse, her current senior living situation will evict her if she cannot care for herself, and will not allow my mother or I to stay there to take care of her. Which means, we need to find her a new home, preferably one my mom can stay at too.

My mother and grandmother are both fairly poor, and I know a lot of people think that I am Mr. GuitarBucks, but frankly, I am not quite to the "bankroll $10k+ a month for senior care" point yet. If I could, I absolutely would.

Why does this matter to you?

1. Jayme and I probably going to be out a lot over the next couple months. If you need to talk to me, you might want to email ahead and find out when I will be in. (I might add, most things people think only I can handle, my guys can easily help you with.)

2. I am extending our NO CASH OUT policy until further notice as I will not be around to write checks. Trades and consignments still welcomed and encouraged!

I would like to say again: my guys are fantastic. Go do business with them. They are friendly and knowledgeable, and all very good at their jobs.

I have had a really hard couple of days and I greatly appreciate your patience and understanding with me and my team in this difficult time.

Hey everyone, just a PSA that I am going to be out

Hey everyone, just a PSA that I am going to be out of the shop until next weekend.

I have had a pretty rough couple of weeks in my personal life: both of my grandmothers had health scares, we had major structural repairs done on our home, I chipped a tooth and this was the last week for us to get our tax files to our accountant.

I am pretty fried, but Jayme and I are on the way to Paducah to visit my Grandmothers. I am not sure what the future will bring for them - one is doing much better and one is not doing great at all. Whatever happens, it will likely require me to take even more time away from the store.

I want to remind everyone: my guys are great. Cade, Tyler, Jon, Jude and Jad are all very competent and friendly people who I gladly trust with my life's work. Any business you can do with me, they will be happy to help you with!

Coincidentally: I will also not be able to come out to the Amigo Show this weekend - sorry I am going to miss so many of my friend who only come to town once a year. Play a $500k guitar for me!

This space will be non-public facing for now, so most of you will only see it on here, but I am hoping it will allow us to expand our tooling and services, do cool new things with @lazarusguitars and stuff like that.

I love these kinds of jobs. Being 5 years dry myself, I love helping musicians that are recovering from addiction. I find we always have lots to talk about.

Yesterday, Chris from @vibratone_guitars was in the shop and from about 10 feet away he asked "is that a vintage Starcaster?" I coulda cried. Best compliment he could have paid me!

"Looks vintage at 5+ feet away" was exactly the vibe I was going for!

I am really happy with this "hiding a repair with a relic" method. Fender neck breaks are impossible to hide, but easy to distract the eye away from. #headstockrepair

#notforsale: My customer bought this "old parts bass" for under $500 and low and behold, it is a real 1962 Pre-CBS Precision Bass. Body & neck!

Neck is all original. Body was refinished, likely in the 1980s-1990s. Pickup & tuners are also original.

Leo Quan and pickguard look to be from the 1980s.
As do the brass knobs.

1970 wiring harness is kinda the rad herring here, but all told, what a killer piece of player vintage my customer scooped for a steal. Those deals are still out there, folks! #vintage #vintagefender

I dunno why I feel like I owe you guys updates on

I dunno why I feel like I owe you guys updates on the Starcaster repair, but the lacquer came in from @stewmac_guitar and I just sprayed the touch-up.

I have been working on a method of repair I think I am pioneering (jk) called "repair and hide real damage with fake damage." I have been pretty obsessed with using vintage guitar style relics to cover up structural repairs.

I sprayed the lacquer on this a little heavy around the repairs and I am going to use steel wool to wear it in a bit after it cures. If I am successful, the heavier tint around the repair will just look like play wear / hand gunk.

Anyway, I know this is not everyone's cup of tea, but I like it and I think my customer's guitar is gonna look rad in the end. #guitarrepair #relic #headstockrepair

I am going to be honest with you guys, the general public and online buying public have been grinding me down. It seems much more often that people are more crass, rude and / or unpleasant in all of the interactions in their virtual or literal lives.

I see a general vacancy day in and day out at the store - people are living so deep in their own little bubbles that they are unaware of what is happening around them. (Literally, not metaphorically.)

My online messages used to contain a lot of pleasantries and I made a ton of friends through post-sale discussion. It seems more and more people are skipping the "Hey man, how is it going?..." and going straight to "WEIGHT?!?" or "ETA?!"

So today I roll into the parking lot of Office Max to drop off some FedEx packages with my faith in humanity running low and I am stopped by an older gentleman who looked a lot like my own grandfather. I thought "great, he is going to chew me out for where I parked, what I am doing,etc."

Then, he hands me this and says "I don't need any money, I just love to draw....never had a lesson!" Before shaking my hand, skittering off and driving away.

I can never tell him how much I needed that.
I would love to see more of that.
