Hey everyone, this is a post to let you know that

Hey everyone, this is a post to let you know that I will (usually) not be in the shop on Thursdays from here on out.

We will still be open, just staff-run, no-Jack Thursdays. If you are coming to the store to talk to me, Thursday is NOT the day to do it.

For the past ~3 years, my schedule has looked like this:

Monday: Half rest / half errands & chores
Tuesday: 8-12 hours of shop work
Wednesday: 8-12 hours of running the store & shipping
Thursday: 8-12 hours of running the store & shipping
Friday: 8-12 hours of running the store & shipping
Saturday: 8-12 hours of running the store & shipping
Sunday: 6-10 hours of running the store & shipping

This schedule is killing me. It is fraying my mental health. It is leaving me with no time to do "weekend chores" which means my house looks like the selfie above most of the time. My house needs a lot of work that I have not been able to do because I have been so chained to the store.

At the beginning of August, I worked myself into a pretty rough corner mentally and was having pretty frequent panic attacks - feeling trapped in my schedule and unable to take time to myself.

I really need two days a week: one to rest and one to take care of things at home. So from now on, Monday is my rest day and Thursday is my "weekend chores" day. This will also allow me to spend more time in my workshop doing R&D on new stuff / working on new projects for the business (*cough cough, the podcast I have wanted to do for years now*).

I have a great staff, who are all incredibly capable. I promise you the shop is worth the visit even if I am taking a day off.

Been wanting to build a guitar that has half a P-bass pickup under the bottom four strings on a stereo out so I could do the opposite of what I do on bass for BiT and Toxic Culture. This might be the guitar that gets the stereo bass out.

Either way, just showing it off for now. If you are suuuper interested in it, DM me a number, I might be persuaded to sell it as is.

Surprise everyone, I got a new guitar again. My buddy @cwinnstrings does Jerry Garcia guitar conversions - now listen, I am not the world's biggest Dead fan, but I am becoming a believer in Jerrytone.

I had Chad make me a "half Gator - fourth position only," did I have him block the tremolo just to install a tremolo I like a lot better? Yes.

He dubbed this one "Quattro" since it is the fourth position of a standard strat only. I think I will keep the name. Susie Quattro. Neck and middle pickup on, no pickup switch. The switch turns on the boost. The fourth position of a Strat is the only one I use and on a standard Strat, I have a habit of smacking the blade switch when I get into playing. Why keep options that get in the way?

The @adrpedals Alligator Blaster was the real selling point to me, the presence boost it provides is choooice. This guitar now nails the @casualsects tone.

Drove up to Kentucky today to see Nanny in the hospital. She has all her speech, motor function and long-term memory back. Her short term memory and emotions are still a little erratic and mixed up. She has a long recovery ahead; but they are optimistic about her recovery chances.

She is at least in good enough spirits to be her silly self again.

I am going to be in and out of the shop a lot in the next two weeks or so. I just got a call that my Nanny (grandmother) has had a pretty major stroke, and I am not sure what I am going to need to do for my family at this time.

On top of that, I am honestly going a little gonzo. I have been working 60+ hour work weeks for around 3 years now, and I am just deep rooted tired and burnt out. I need a little time right now to get back to being myself and spend some time with my family so I can get back to being the shopkeep, boss, guitar tech & friend y'all deserve. The State Fair is the next two weeks, and I was planning to take some time off anyway considering we are usually slow during the fair.

So I am asking you very nicely: to please treat my staff with the same respect and care you would treat me. They are all VERY capable and talented and here to help you, so please try to do business with them in my absence.

If you do need to deal with me directly, it might be best to send an EMAIL to jacksguitarcheology@gmail.com and make an appointment so that you are sure to catch me.

Thank you for your understanding in this time. Sometimes this life I have built for myself does not leave me with a lot of time to be a human being and I am pretty bad at forcing myself to take that time....but I need to now.

I shouldn't have to tell you, but the name Gruhn has been synonymous with "fantastic guitars" for a half century now.

What you probably don't know is that these guitars are literally made in our backyard....and I am not using this as hyperbole for "they are made like 20 mins away." They are literally made in the building behind us. If you exit via our back alley, it lets out right in front of their shop!

We have been thrilled to be George and Crew our neighbors and we are even more thrilled to be colleagues. When people used to ask me my goals, I used to say (half joking) "I want to be the Millennial George Gruhn."

Thus, getting to be one of the very few Versitar dealers in the world is a dream-come-true for us!

If you are thinking of running at something, start working on it a little now. Whatever it is. I have spent this evening thinking about the last 8 years, and when I zoom out to the macro, it is WILD how far and how fast this has gone.

What you are looking at in the pictures above is the first Guitarcheology batch. I somehow turned that into a guitar store.

I did it little-by-little, and I did most of the more difficult / frustrating work in the five years before opening the brick and mortar.

I am really glad now I just started buying and fixing guitars without a real solid plan or too many skills, instead of saying "One day I will own a guitar store" and waiting til the plan was perfect or the time was right. I figured out what I was doing along the way, and honestly the plan just sort of fell in place in front of me as I went along.

LEONARD WOLSKE – here is a fun little project I di

LEONARD WOLSKE - here is a fun little project I did for a local customer. It was a family heirloom found in grandma's closet.

We suspect it is Polish, based on the name, or possibly of other Eastern European or Soviet origin based on its resemblance to a Balalaika.

I am fairly sure it was handmade and not a factory guitar, likely by a small or hobbyist luthier. My best guesses: 1. It was made in Eastern Europe and was carried over with immigration. OR 2. It was built in the US by an Eastern European immigrant using old world methods.

When it came in, it was a husk. We cleaned and oiled the tuners, sealed some cracks and breaks and retrofitted a Harmony bridge. It has SUPER TALL frets (common in EE / Soviet countries), but honestly it plays surprisingly well. You would never know it is certainly 100+ years old.

The tone is interesting too, it has a deep low mid and low end response. Honestly - kinda like a rubber bridge.

Finished tracking bass for the new @toxicculture61

Finished tracking bass for the new @toxicculture615 release at @black_matter_mastering today...and it got me thinking I have never really made a post about my bass rig.

Before that though, just want to shout out one of my favorite basses, my @serek_basses Grand. This bass absolutely growls, best player in my arsenal at any scale. They just released a new batch of these in pink and I think there are just a few left. Check them out on their website!

Now - on to my board. If you have ever seen @toxicculture615 or @bigiftrueband, you might have noticed my bass tone is a little...unorthodox. That is to say, I have developed a pedalboard that allows me to run a bass amp and guitar amp and act as both a bassist and a second guitarist.

I have had many iterations of this pedalboard that I originally dreamed up on the fly before the one gig where the guitar player in my band punched out the singer (he deserved it) 90 minutes before a big gig and I needed an inventive way to replace him. (Story for another time.)

I use an A/B/Y box, I like this Morley one, but any will do.

I run the "B" out to my @haggtronix Cerebral Spectre and @bigearpedals Chaka. That is just my standard bass tone, goes to the bass amp. (The B stands for "Bass")

I run the A to a @digitechfx Whammy set to "Up the 5th + Octave." Put that into my @haggtronix Blood Eagle, gate and @oldbloodnoise EQ + Buffer. I run this to the guitar amp and it creates my "guitar" tone. Sounds like a guitar playing power chords over what ever bass notes I am playing.

I can toggle each on individually, so I can isolate parts when I need to. It really helps fill out a band - especially if you are a 2 or 3 pc. I have been using this iteration of the rig for 3-4 years now.

(I took inspiration from the guy in Royal Blood, but he is super secretive about his set up. I am fairly certain I have gotten close to what he is doing now, though.)

I spent a lot of time, money and thought figuring this out, but tbh, if you wanted to steal ideas from me to fill out your band's sound - I would be more flattered than offended. 😉

This customer brought this Martin in after his usual tech told him the only way to go was a refret.

It took a lot of elbow grease, but we were able to get the frets releveled and recrowned without the refret for now. This guitar WILL eventually need the refret, but, we have kicked that can at least another 5-10 years down the road....and at 1/2 the cost.

If your guitar really needs a refret, but it is not truly in the cards right now economically, come buy some time with us and ask about Jack's Fret Rescue services!

If you are unfamiliar with Chad and his work, he is one of the most hard working and superior luthiers in the Nashville area, if not the whole country.

His work these days largely focuses on the gear of the late, great @jerrygarcia. So, when I got in this 1970s Conqueror body and neck, I knew exactly what it needed - the C. Winn Gator Treatment!

This one is a killer true Jerry rig - brass nut and hardware, blocked tremolo, @adrpedals Gator Blaster and #twinzy pickups. Great for jazz, but also a really versatile instrument that would work in a lot of situations where warmer Strat tone is needed.

This guy is up online and in-store. It is priced to sell and I suspect won't last long. #jerryguitars #Gator #gatorstrat #jerrygator

Hey, yes, hello, hi....WE ARE CLOSED ON MONDAYS. This is what me and Toby look like for most of the day, most Mondays.

Please do not try to pull me into working on a Monday. Running the store is very emotionally and physically exhausting, and I have found that if I don't get at least one day a week to just "not," I turn into a little bit of a crazy person who is rather unpleasant to be around.

Tuesday is my workshop day and I run the store Wednesday - Sunday. I have been working 6 days a week now for nearly 3 years. "I don't work on Mondays" is a personal boundary I have to draw so I can keep my sanity. I appreciate you understanding.

(This post is not directed at anyone in particular, there were a few of you this week that tried to get me on urgent business on a Monday. I am sorry; I really want to help you, I just can't do this 24/7/365.)

#FenderFriday: Welp, I was building this Tele to sell at the store, but I $crewed around and made it too good, so now I have to keep it.

Spare parts build:
-Paulownia body - whole guitar weighs 5 lbs 6 oz.
-Strap buttons made from vintage piano knockers I got from @amopianos
-Squier SQR Tele Bucker bridge
-NGW Tele Neck pickup and pickguard
-Chrome n Bronze hardware
-3-way toggle, flipped plate
-Squier neck that I redid the fretwork on
-Wilkinson bridge - which is the only part I bought for the project.

This thing is a feather-weight beast now. Gonna sell one of my expensive guitars and keep this one.

Also: guitar leaning against tree is back for this post - that is an easter egg for all the people who have been following me for a while. IYKYK.

I often tell people that "First Act in the 2000s was to Millennials what Harmony and Silvertone were to Boomers in the 1960s-1970s."

So many of me and my friends growing up, the first guitars we played or worked on were designed by this man right here. Where I grew up - the closest thing we had to a guitar store was the First Act isle at Walmart.
